Check Card Fraud Excelerating

In the week of September 15th, we have seen an acceleration of fraudulent card activity involving use of Check Card numbers to produce fake plastic used in other states.

Our fraud detection company has been effective in protecting our customers from loss.  Nonetheless, we have taken some precautionary steps to aid in deterring fraudulent attempts.

Please note, we have lowered purchase limits on our Check Cards and have also required PINs on transactions in geographical areas where we are seeing elevated fraud attempts.

We have issued new cards to replace affected cards and should be completed by month-end.  At that point, all affected cards will be closed.

We apologize for this inconvenience and hope this will be temporary.  Our desire is to protect our customers as best as we can.

Our Annual Free Shred Day was Another Huge Success

Our Free Shred Day on Saturday, September 13th at our Interstate Office was another huge success, nearly filling the truck with shred material.

Our friends at KnightHorst Shredding in Charleston, WV provided on-site shredding of all documents.

According to KnightHorst, they shredded 12,500 pounds of paper at our event.

We enjoyed the opportunity to interact with those in our community and to provide, what many told us Saturday was, a valuable service.

We thank those who participated and we will plan to return in September of 2015.

Vacation Time and your VISA Check Card

When you do this, we can alert our fraud specialists so you can continue to use your card without delay.

Help Us Fight Card Fraud

From time-to-time, Putnam County Bank will receive alerts from VISA International concerning compromises in our customers' VISA Check Cards.  These alerts are a result of anti-fraud devices VISA uses to monitor card activity.  A compromise suggests that card numbers and expiration dates "may" have fallen into wrong hands...no other information.  Putnam County Bank utilizes a variety of tools which provide around-the-clock monitoring of these transactions to prevent fraud and unauthorized use.

While we employ state-of-the-art tools, we still need the help of our customers to fight fraud.  Here are some important tips to remember to help us fight fraud:

Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN):

• Never write down your PIN. Memorize it as soon as you get it.

• Do not disclose your PIN to anyone. No one from any financial institution, the police or a merchant should ever ask for your PIN.

• Beware of phishing emails. These are emails that appear to be from your bank or online merchant asking for account information. Do not reply to them or click on any links.  Visa, your bank or any other legitimate online merchant will never ask for your PIN or other personal financial information via email.

• At an ATM or PIN pad, enter your PIN discreetly, shielding the keypad with your hand or body.

Spot suspicious activity and protect your account:

1. Review your monthly checking account statements to spot any unauthorized purchases.

You can also monitor your account activity online at any time at www.putcobk.com or via the telephone toll-free by using PUTNAM-24.

2. Review your credit reports for accuracy. Call any one of the three credit reporting agencies to receive your free annual credit report.

3. If you spot any unauthorized charges, please contact us immediately at (304) 562-9931.

4. You should also contact the three credit reporting agencies listed above to notify them of any suspected fraud or identity theft.

Prevent ID Theft - Sign-up for Free e-Statement Service

A September 2008 article in the American Banker ("Going Paperless: A Rare Strategy of Win-Win-Win") cites that the average person could reduce their chances of suffering identity theft fraud by as much as 9% by shutting off paper statements and bills.

The article continues to say that an average household received 26 bills, statement and checks per month in 2006.  In addition to the safety aspect, it also has great ecological value.  Less paper means lower requirements of wood pulp, water and energy as well as less waste to landfills.  Less paper waste means cleaner air from less emission of methane gases in landfills.

There has never been a better time than now to sign-up for e-Statements for Checking and Savings accounts.  By enrolling in e-Statements, you eliminate the need to pick up statements from your mail as your statements and images are e-mailed to you via a secure website.  Generally, your e-Statement is available the following business day.

E-statements provide you security by removing your account information from your mailbox and providing it soon after your statement date.  Once you access your statement, you may print it or save it on your pc.  The print quality is equal to statements received in the mail.

Please take advantage of e-Statements today.  Visit any of our locations for more information and to sign up.
